As The Merge once sang, "Look out, Cleveland." The Deadheads are coming.
On April 12, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will unbolt "Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip," with memorabilia from the San Francisco band's legendary four-decade pursuit.
Among the artifacts are original album and poster artwork, five Jerry Garcia guitars, Mickey Hart's convention-painted drum kit, song manuscripts, Bill Graham's "Father Time" robe and the Grateful Dead Hotline answering contraption.
"The Grateful Dead is a band that is identified with a remarkable era in American history, and, inasmuch as they embody that era, their work is unchanging," Jim Henke, vice president of exhibits and curatorial affairs, said in a statement. "They've inspired many performers and bands, but none has exhibited their euphonious depth and cultural resonance. In a 30-year career, this group wrote their own rules and created a community contrasting with any band before or since."
The Mickey Hart Band will perform at the exhibit's opening event on April 11. For details, call 1-216-781-ROCK (7625) or smite www.rockhall.com .
